Every CS2 skin has a float value: a number between 0 and 1 that decides how worn the paint looks. Lower is cleaner. Glaciologists read the past from ice cores, and on PenguinSkins you read a skin the same way: the ice core bar on each card shows exactly where its float sits on the wear scale.
The five wear bands
| Wear | Float range | Ice core nickname |
|---|---|---|
| Factory New | 0.00 – 0.07 | fresh powder |
| Minimal Wear | 0.07 – 0.15 | packed snow |
| Field-Tested | 0.15 – 0.38 | firn |
| Well-Worn | 0.38 – 0.45 | slush |
| Battle-Scarred | 0.45 – 1.00 | black ice |
Why two skins with the same wear look different
A Field-Tested AK-47 at 0.16 and one at 0.37 share a label but not a look. The first is almost Minimal Wear; the second is close to Well-Worn. That is why every listing here shows the exact float, not just the wear name.
The finish range
Not every finish can drop across the whole scale. Bright Water knives, for example, only exist between 0.00 and 0.50. On the ice core bar, the outlined band is the range a finish can have, and the orange pin is this item’s float.
Quick rules
- For knives and gloves, a low float matters most on finishes with large clean areas (Fade, Doppler, Blue Steel).
- For camo finishes like Boreal Forest or Arctic Wolf, wear changes the look less, so a mid-range float can be the best value.
- Sort the market by “Float: lowest first” or use the FN preset in the filters to find the cleanest items.
