Steam Guard, trade holds and why timing matters

Safety · 3 min read

Most delivery delays we see at the station have nothing to do with the skin and everything to do with the account receiving it. Steam protects trading with a security layer called Steam Guard, and depending on how your account is set up, Steam may hold a trade for a while before the items move. This note explains what is going on and how to get the timing right.

What Steam Guard is

Steam Guard is Steam’s built-in account protection. It comes in two forms:

  • Email Steam Guard: Steam emails you a code when you sign in from a device it does not recognise.
  • Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator: the official Steam mobile app generates your sign-in codes, and it is where you confirm trades and Community Market listings.

Both are better than nothing, but the Mobile Authenticator is the one Steam rewards when it comes to trading.

What a trade hold is

A trade hold means Steam accepts the trade but keeps the items in a holding state for a period before delivering them. It is a protective delay: if someone has broken into an account, the hold gives the real owner time to notice and cancel the trade before the items are gone.

Steam may apply a hold or a trade restriction in situations such as:

  • The Mobile Authenticator is not enabled on the account.
  • The Mobile Authenticator was enabled recently and has not been active long enough yet.
  • Recent security changes, such as a password reset or removing Steam Guard, which can restrict trading for a while.

The exact length depends on the situation, and Valve can change the rules, so we will not quote day counts here. Steam shows a notice in the trade offer window when a hold applies, and Steam Support’s own pages carry the current details.

Why timing matters for your order

Every PenguinSkins order follows the same path, visible in Base camp → Orders: Order placed → Payment confirmed → Trade offer sent → Delivered. Our bot sends a Steam trade offer with the exact item you bought, with the same float and seed as the listing. If your account is under a hold, that last step can stretch out even though nothing is wrong with the order itself.

The fix is to prepare in advance. The best moment to activate the Mobile Authenticator is before you shop, not while a trade offer is waiting. Emperor penguins sit on an egg for weeks without complaint; your authenticator only needs a little settling-in time.

A short pre-flight checklist

  • Activate the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the official Steam app, ideally well before a big purchase.
  • Avoid changing your password or Steam Guard settings right before you expect a delivery, unless you have a real security reason to. If you do, security comes first.
  • Make sure your Steam inventory is set to public.
  • Save your trade URL in Base camp → Trade URL so it is pre-filled at checkout.
  • When the offer arrives, check that the item matches your order, then accept it and confirm it in the Steam app.

What we will never ask for

To deliver a skin, the store only needs your trade URL. We will never ask for your Steam login, password, Steam Guard codes or API key, and nobody legitimate will. If someone claiming to be station staff asks for any of these, stop, do not reply with the details, and write to support@penguinskins.com from our Contacts page.
