Setting up the Steam Mobile Authenticator for safer trading

Safety · 2 min read

If the station could hand every customer one piece of equipment, it would be the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. It makes your account much harder to break into, it is where you confirm trades, and it helps you avoid the trade holds Steam applies to accounts without it. It is free and built into the official Steam app.

What it does

  • Generates short-lived Steam Guard codes that refresh at regular intervals, used when you sign in on a new device.
  • Lets you confirm trades and Community Market listings from your phone.
  • Once it has been active for long enough, it helps you avoid the trade holds that affect accounts without it.

Before you start

  • Use the official Steam app published by Valve, from the App Store or Google Play. Never install an “authenticator” from a link someone sent you.
  • Make sure you can access the email address on your Steam account, and your phone number if Steam asks to verify it.
  • Have a pen and paper ready for the recovery code. Yes, paper. Offline cold storage is the whole point.

Setting it up

  • Install the Steam app and sign in to your account.
  • Open the Steam Guard section of the app.
  • Choose to add the authenticator and follow the prompts. Steam will ask you to verify the change, for example with a code sent to your email or phone.
  • Steam shows you a recovery code. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe and offline.
  • Finish the setup. The app now shows your rolling Steam Guard code and a list of pending confirmations.

Button names can shift between app versions, but the flow stays the same: Steam Guard, add the authenticator, verify, save the recovery code.

Confirming a trade from the station

When our bot sends your order, you receive a Steam trade offer. Before you accept, check that:

  • The item is exactly what you ordered. Our bot sends the exact item from the listing, with the same float and seed.
  • Your order in Base camp → Orders shows Trade offer sent.
  • You are not being asked to give any of your own items. A purchase from the store only moves items to you.

Then accept the offer and approve it in the Steam app’s confirmations. Once a trade offer is accepted, the sale is final, so those few seconds of checking are well spent.

Keeping it safe

  • Never share Steam Guard codes. No store, support agent or “Steam employee” needs them. PenguinSkins only needs your trade URL, never your login, password or API key.
  • Keep the recovery code offline. If you lose your phone, it is how you remove the authenticator and get back in control.
  • Removing the authenticator, or moving it to a new phone, can lead to temporary trade restrictions. Plan changes for a quiet week, not the day before a delivery.
  • If you lose both your phone and the recovery code, use Steam Support’s official account recovery. Ignore anyone offering to “recover” your account for you.

Set it up once, keep the code safe, and the authenticator mostly stays out of your way, like a good penguin on egg duty: quiet, patient, always on watch. If you have questions about a specific order, write to support@penguinskins.com via the Contacts page.
