Knife names are easy. Finish names are where it gets confusing. Here’s a compact reference to the finishes you’ll see most often, grouped the way most players talk about them, with the one thing to check first on each.
One note before the tables: not every finish exists in every wear. Where a finish is limited to certain wear levels, it’s noted in the last column, so you know what to expect before you start filtering.
The originals
These finishes came with the first knives and still show up across most knife models.
| Finish | Look | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | Plain steel, no finish | Nothing: vanilla knives have no float or wear, so you only choose the knife |
| Fade | Yellow, pink, purple and blue gradient | Pattern seed (fade percentage); Factory New and Minimal Wear only |
| Case Hardened | Steel with blue, gold and purple patina | Pattern seed; blue gems |
| Crimson Web | Red webs on a dark base | Web placement on the visible side; Factory New is very hard to find |
| Slaughter | Red, pink and white swirls | Pattern shapes (diamond, angel, heart); never worse than Field-Tested |
| Blue Steel | Blued steel with tone variations | Float and overall tone |
| Night, Stained, Scorched, Urban Masked, Safari Mesh, Boreal Forest, Forest DDPAT | Dark, muted or camo looks | Float and price; usually the most affordable way into a knife |
Chroma finishes
| Finish | Look | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Doppler | Metallic swirls in Phases 1–4, plus Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl | Phase, then float; Factory New and Minimal Wear only |
| Marble Fade | Red, gold and blue marble | Pattern seed (Fire & Ice); Factory New and Minimal Wear only |
| Tiger Tooth | Bright gold with dark tiger stripes | Float; Factory New and Minimal Wear only |
| Damascus Steel | Layered, wavy steel | Float |
| Rust Coat | Deliberately rusted metal | Price; the rough look is the point |
| Ultraviolet | Deep purple over black | Float; lower floats keep the purple solid |
Gamma finishes
| Finish | Look | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Gamma Doppler | Green-tinted swirls in Phases 1–4, plus Emerald | Phase, then float; Factory New and Minimal Wear only |
| Lore | Gilded, engraved artwork designed for each knife model | Float; wear rubs away the fine detail |
| Autotronic | Red and black mechanical design | Float |
| Bright Water | Blue-green watery pattern | Float; the finish only goes up to 0.50 |
| Black Laminate | Dark layered laminate | Float and price |
| Freehand | Sketched, hand-drawn look | Float |
Quick rules
- Pattern-driven finishes (Fade, Case Hardened, Marble Fade, Crimson Web, Slaughter): check the seed first, the float second.
- Phase-driven finishes (Doppler, Gamma Doppler): check the phase first; our Doppler phases guide covers them in detail.
- Art-driven finishes (Lore, Autotronic, Freehand): the float decides how crisp the design looks.
- Camo and dark finishes: often the best value, since a Field-Tested float can look nearly as good as a much lower one.
- Vanilla: no float, no seed, no phase. You’re paying purely for the knife type.
Using the sheet
Every PenguinSkins listing shows float, wear, pattern seed, rarity, StatTrak™ status and the phase where it applies, so you can run through this sheet without leaving the page. We keep a printed copy on the mess hall wall, right next to the rota for who clears snow off the antenna.
