Your first knife is a milestone. It is also usually the most expensive item in a young inventory, which means it deserves a slower, colder look than an impulse buy. Here are the ten points the colony would check before taking one home.
Choosing the knife
- 1. Set your budget first. Prices on PenguinSkins are in EUR. Decide your ceiling before browsing, because knife tabs have a way of creeping upward one listing at a time.
- 2. Pick a model you actually like. Karambit, Butterfly Knife, M9 Bayonet, Talon, Skeleton and the rest each have their own shape and inspect animation. You will see it in first person every time you pull it out, so the model matters as much as the paint.
- 3. Choose the finish. Fade, Doppler, Case Hardened, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth or a plain Vanilla knife with no finish at all. Finishes differ a lot in price and in how much wear and pattern matter.
Reading the listing
- 4. Check the exact float, not just the wear label. Two knives with the same wear name can look noticeably different. The ice core bar on every listing shows exactly where the float sits.
- 5. Check the finish range. Not every finish covers the whole wear scale, so the best float for one finish may be impossible on another. The outlined band on the ice core bar shows the range.
- 6. Look at the pattern. On finishes such as Case Hardened, Fade and Marble Fade, the pattern seed decides where the colours land. For Dopplers, check the phase. Two knives with the same name can be very different animals.
- 7. Decide on StatTrak™. A StatTrak knife counts kills made with it by its owner, and usually carries a premium. Whether the counter is worth it is entirely your call.
Getting your account ready
- 8. Prepare your Steam account. Activate the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator well in advance to avoid trade holds, set your inventory to public, and save your trade URL in Base camp → Trade URL so it is pre-filled at checkout.
- 9. Know the rules before you pay. If the store cannot deliver an item, the payment is refunded in full to the original method. Once you accept the trade offer, the sale is final. On your first order, the code FIRSTFREEZE takes 5% off.
When the offer arrives
- 10. Check the trade offer against your order. Our bot sends the exact item you bought, with the same float and seed as the listing. Your order in Base camp → Orders should read Trade offer sent. If anything does not match, do not accept; write to support first.
After accepting, confirm the trade in the Steam app. When the order shows Delivered, the knife is yours.
One more thing
At no point in this checklist does anyone need your Steam login, password, Steam Guard codes or API key. The store only needs your trade URL. If someone asks for more, treat it as a scam, and contact us at support@penguinskins.com via the Contacts page.
Then go and enjoy the inspect animation. Repeatedly. The colony certainly does.
