Ask a room of CS2 players to name an expensive skin and the AWP | Dragon Lore will come up fast. Its price isn’t a mystery, though. It’s the result of a few simple forces stacked on top of each other: a limited source, a supply that stopped growing, a design people love and a long history in the scene. Let’s take them one at a time.
Where it comes from
The Dragon Lore is the Covert skin of the Cobblestone Collection, named after the map Cobblestone. It was never in a weapon case. It reached players mostly through souvenir packages from Major tournaments where Cobblestone was played, including ESL One Cologne 2014 and later events.
That origin gives it two quirks. Many Dragon Lores are souvenirs, carrying gold stickers from a specific match. And because it comes from a map collection rather than a case, no StatTrak™ Dragon Lore exists.
A supply that stopped growing
Cobblestone left the competitive map pool years ago, and with it went the main stream of new Dragon Lores. Meanwhile the player base and the skin market kept growing. A supply that has effectively stopped, meeting demand that keeps rising, is the oldest pricing story there is, and the Dragon Lore is its textbook example.
Souvenir packages add one more twist. Some were opened right away, others were kept sealed for years, and every package belongs to a particular match. So the Dragon Lores that exist are not one uniform pool but many small batches, each with its own stickers and its own story.
What makes one Dragon Lore worth more than another
Not all dragons are equal. Two copies can sit very far apart in price, and the reasons are usually easy to spot on the listing:
| Factor | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Wear | Lower floats show the dragon’s linework more crisply |
| Float within the band | Two Field-Tested copies can look noticeably different, so check the exact value |
| Souvenir status | Souvenir copies carry gold tournament stickers from a specific match |
| Sticker story | Which event, which teams and which player’s autograph can all add a premium |
The design does the rest
Scarcity alone doesn’t make a legend. The Dragon Lore also looks the part: a dragon rendered like an illustration from an old manuscript, in golds and greens, wrapped around the most expensive gun in the round. It has been part of the scene since the CS:GO era and is often the skin people point to when they explain skins to someone new. That cultural weight keeps demand steady even among players who will never own one.

Our Dragon Lore sits on the AWP shelf in Field-Tested, and you can see exactly where its float lands in the Ice Core Lab. The penguins have been asked not to breathe on the display case.
