Every skin in CS2 has a birthplace. Before you buy, it helps to know where an item came from, because its origin decides which versions can exist (StatTrak™, Souvenir or neither), how much supply is out there and sometimes why two similar-looking skins sit at very different prices. Here’s the field guide, no ice axe required.
Collections: the family tree
A collection is a named set of skins released together, and almost every weapon finish belongs to one. Collections come in two broad flavours: those tied to a weapon case, and those tied to a map or operation, such as the Cobblestone Collection that gave us the AWP | Dragon Lore. Each collection spans a range of rarity grades, and trade-up contracts only ever promote you within the collections you put in.
Weapon cases
A weapon case is a sealed container that needs a matching key to open. Cases hold skins from Mil-Spec up to Covert, plus the gold “rare special item” slot, usually knives or gloves. Two things set case skins apart:
- StatTrak™ is possible. Case skins can drop as StatTrak™ versions, which carry a counter that tracks the owner’s kills with that weapon.
- No Consumer or Industrial Grade. Cases skip the bottom two grades entirely.
Cases also age. Valve moves older cases out of the active drop pool over time, so fewer new copies enter the game, which tends to tighten supply for both the case and the skins inside it.
Souvenir packages
Souvenir packages are tied to Major tournaments. Each one belongs to a specific match and contains a skin from that map’s collection, already decorated with gold stickers: the event logo, the two teams that played and often a player’s autograph. Souvenir skins follow their own rules:
- They can never be StatTrak™; the two are mutually exclusive.
- They can’t be used in trade-up contracts.
- The sticker combination is part of their identity, so a souvenir from a famous match can be worth far more than the same skin from a quiet one.
- Once an event is over, its packages stop being handed out, so each souvenir run is effectively a closed batch.
Side by side
| Source | How it works | Grades | StatTrak™ | Souvenir |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon case | Opened with a key | Mil-Spec to Covert, plus rare special items | Possible | Never |
| Souvenir package | Tied to a Major match | Depends on the map collection | Never | Always |
| Trade-up contract | Ten skins of one grade in, one out | One grade above the inputs | Only from StatTrak™ inputs | Never |
Why origin matters when you buy
When you shop, origin explains a lot. Two Dragon Lores with the same float can differ hugely in price if one carries souvenir stickers from a celebrated match. A StatTrak™ version of a case skin trades on its own curve. And skins from old, closed-off collections hold their scarcity in a way that fresh case skins usually don’t.
Whatever the origin, delivery at PenguinSkins works the same way: our bot sends the exact item by Steam trade offer, same float and seed, so what you see on the listing is what lands in your inventory. We only ever need your trade URL, never your Steam login.
