A float value is a number between 0 and 1 that decides how worn a skin’s paint looks. Lower is cleaner. It is a simple idea, yet it collects myths the way a penguin collects pebbles. Here are the five the station hears most often, and what is actually true.
Myth 1: “Your skin wears down the more you use it”
It does not. A skin’s float is set when the item is created and stays the same for its whole life. Playing matches, getting kills, inspecting it and trading it change nothing. A 0.03 knife bought today will still be a 0.03 knife years from now.
Stickers are the exception people mix up with this: a sticker can be scraped, and that does change how the sticker looks. The weapon’s own float stays put.
Myth 2: “Every skin comes in Factory New”
Each finish has its own float range, and many do not cover the full 0 to 1 scale. The AWP | Asiimov is a well-known example: its range starts at 0.18, so there is no Factory New or Minimal Wear Asiimov. Other finishes stop short at the high end instead. On PenguinSkins, the outlined band on the ice core bar shows the range a finish can have.
Myth 3: “Same wear name, same look”
Wear names are bands, not exact values:
| Wear | Float range |
|---|---|
| Factory New (FN) | 0.00 – 0.07 |
| Minimal Wear (MW) | 0.07 – 0.15 |
| Field-Tested (FT) | 0.15 – 0.38 |
| Well-Worn (WW) | 0.38 – 0.45 |
| Battle-Scarred (BS) | 0.45 – 1.00 |
Field-Tested alone covers 0.15 to 0.38. A skin at 0.16 is close to Minimal Wear; one at 0.37 is close to Well-Worn. Same label, different look. That is why every listing at the station shows the exact float, not just the wear name.
Myth 4: “A lower float is always worth more”
Often a cleaner float does carry a premium, but the relationship is not a straight line. Camo finishes and busy patterns hide wear well, so a mid-range float can look almost the same as a much cleaner one for less money. On finishes with large clean surfaces, such as Fade or Doppler, scratches show more and the float matters more.
Price also depends on the finish, the pattern, StatTrak™, and plain demand. And some collectors go looking for extreme floats at either end of the scale, so even a very high float can find a fan. Ice is ice, but some ice ends up in a museum.
Myth 5: “Float is the only thing that decides how a skin looks”
Float decides wear. The pattern seed decides how the design is placed on the item. Two Case Hardened knives with identical floats can look completely different, because the seed changes where the blue and gold land. The same goes for finishes such as Fade, Marble Fade and Crimson Web, where the seed shapes the result.
When you buy from PenguinSkins, our bot delivers the exact item from the listing, with the same float and the same seed. What you see on the listing is what arrives in your inventory.
