Most rarity grades in CS2 have plenty of members. Contraband has exactly one weapon skin: the M4A4 | Howl. Its orange stripe isn’t a reward for luck. It’s the result of a copyright dispute, and it turned a popular rifle skin into one of the most recognisable collector items in the game.
A Covert skin in the Huntsman case
The Howl first appeared as a Covert skin in the Huntsman Weapon Case. It wrapped the M4A4 in a snarling wolf head in fiery reds and oranges, and it quickly became a favourite. Like every case skin, it could drop in a normal or a StatTrak™ version.
The copyright problem
Not long after release, it came out that the skin’s artwork was based on another artist’s work, used without permission. Valve’s response was unusual. Rather than deleting the item from inventories, it:
- replaced the disputed artwork with a redrawn wolf design,
- removed the Howl from the Huntsman Weapon Case, so no new copies could be unboxed, and
- moved existing copies into a brand-new rarity grade: Contraband.
Players who already owned a Howl kept it, now with the new artwork. Everyone else would have to trade for one.
Why Contraband changed the market
The reclassification turned the Howl into a closed population. No case produces new copies, and trade-up contracts can’t create one either. The only way to own a Howl is to buy one that already exists. Add a striking design and a story every CS player eventually hears, and you have the ingredients for a long-term collector piece.
Every Howl that changes hands today is one of the copies unboxed before the skin was pulled. Some of those sit in long-term collections and rarely trade at all, so the number actually available at any moment is smaller still. That’s why a Howl listing tends to get attention whenever one appears, and why it’s worth looking carefully at the details before you buy.
It’s worth being clear about what Contraband does not mean. The item isn’t banned, restricted or risky to own. It trades, inspects and plays exactly like any other skin. The label only marks its unusual history.
What to check before buying
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Float | Wear changes how crisp the wolf looks; check the ice core bar or the Ice Core Lab |
| StatTrak™ or normal | Both exist because the Howl came from a case, and they are priced separately |
| Stickers | Applied stickers can add to or take away from the look, depending on taste |
| Delivery method | A legitimate store sends the exact item by Steam trade offer and never asks for your login |
Buying a Howl at the station
A Howl is the kind of item you want handled carefully. On PenguinSkins, our bot sends the exact listing by Steam trade offer, same float and seed. We only ask for your trade URL, and if we can’t deliver, you get a full refund. Until then, it waits in cold storage, which is fitting: the only other howling the station hears is the wind.
