Marble Fade patterns: Fire & Ice and friends

Guides · 2 min read

Marble Fade is a knife finish with swirling red, gold and blue over a polished blade. As with Fade and Case Hardened, the pattern seed decides where those colors land, especially on the tip, which is the part collectors stare at most. Over time the community has given names to the most recognizable layouts.

The pattern names you’ll see

NameWhat it looks likeNotes
Fire & IceOnly red and blue on the visible side, cleanly separated, no goldThe most sought-after layout; only a small set of seeds per knife
Fake Fire & IceA similar red and blue layout with some gold creeping inLooks close at a glance; priced well below the real thing
TricolorClear areas of red, gold and blueA balanced, popular look
Red tip / Blue tipThe tip dominated by one colorUsed loosely; check screenshots

These names describe the playside, the side you see in first person and in the default inspect view. A knife can be a tidy Tricolor on one side and something messier on the other, and it’s the playside the name refers to.

Fire & Ice in more detail

True Fire & Ice is a short list of specific seeds for each knife model, and the list is different for every knife, because the texture maps differently onto each blade. Within those lists, collectors still rank seeds by how cleanly red and blue are separated and how much of the visible side they cover.

Because the gap between Fire & Ice and a near miss can be one small patch of gold, the label sometimes gets stretched. Treat “FI-like” or “almost Fire & Ice” as descriptions, not as the real thing.

Float and wear

Marble Fade knives only come in Factory New and Minimal Wear, so wear is rarely the deciding factor. If the pattern is what you’re paying for, a slightly higher float on a great layout is usually a better buy than a perfect float on an ordinary one.

How to check a Marble Fade

  • Get the seed. Every PenguinSkins listing shows the exact pattern seed, so you don’t have to rely on a label in a screenshot.
  • Match the seed to the knife. Compare it with a community list for that specific knife model, not a generic Marble Fade list.
  • Look at the playside tip. That’s where pattern names are decided.
  • Mind the lighting. Red can look orange and blue can look purple, depending on the map and the screenshot tool.
  • Price the pattern, not the name. If a listing asks for a Fire & Ice premium, the seed should back it up.

Picking one you’ll enjoy

You don’t need a named pattern to enjoy Marble Fade. Plenty of unnamed layouts look great in hand and cost noticeably less. Decide whether you’re buying the look or the label: if it’s the look, inspect and choose what you like; if it’s the label, verify the seed first. Either way, the bot sends the exact knife you picked, same float and same seed.

Fire & Ice also happens to be the station’s most accurate weather forecast: the stove is on, and everything else is frozen.
